Assault on Taxi Driver, Christchurch

Police seek witnesses and missing evidence in relation to an assault incident on a taxi driver which occurred on the 23rd June 2009.

At about 9:15pm on Tuesday 23rd June 2009 a taxi driver picked up a male outside the Christchurch Central city bus exchange on Colombo Street opposite Ballantynes.

The male directed the taxi driver to Tancred Street near Linwood Avenue where he asked the taxi driver to pull over.

The male demanded money and threatened to stab the taxi driver which the taxi driver refused to do.

The male stabbed the taxi driver with a sharp object several times in his chest and neck area before getting out of the vehicle and decamping the scene.

The male ran east on Tancred Street and then turned right into Linwood Avenue where he was shortly after located and arrested by Police.

A 19 year old man has appeared at the Christchurch District Court.

The taxi driver was taken to Christchurch Public Hospital and suffered lacerations to his chest area.

Police are appealing to any witnesses in the Tancred Street and Linwood Avenue area or residents of that area to check their gardens for any unusual items including a sharp looking object and a small shoulder bag.
